Revitalizing the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Auditorium

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has long been a cornerstone for marine education and community engagement. A trusted resource, the aquarium inspires exploration, respect, and conservation of Southern California marine life. Its mission is to engage all visitors in education, recreation, and research to promote knowledge, appreciation, and conservation of marine life. With free admission and a wide range of free or low-cost education programs, the aquarium is fully accessible to the community.

However, an outdated auditorium limited the facility’s potential, leaving it underutilized and overlooked. In partnership with LightWerks, the aquarium embarked on a project to transform this space into a vibrant, multi-functional hub. This revitalization aimed to enhance both educational and cultural experiences, making the auditorium a central attraction once again.

A significant focus of the revitalization was to equip the auditorium with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology. Key manufacturers and solutions played a crucial role in this transformation. The QSC QSYS AV over IP platform was implemented for audio and video transportation and sound processing. Shure MXA ceiling array microphones and MXW wireless microphones ensured clear and reliable audio capture. Epson high-lumen ceiling-mounted projectors provided bright and vibrant visuals. Additionally, the Dolby Atmos surround sound system, including Marantz processing, Lab Gruppen amplifiers, Turbosound speakers, and Tannoy subwoofers, delivered an immersive audio experience. Three PTZ cameras were installed for high-quality video streaming and conferencing, significantly enhancing the auditorium’s functionality.

The primary objective of the project was to modernize the auditorium, equipping it with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology to support lectures, performances, video conferencing, and community events. The scope of work included installing advanced video conferencing systems, upgrading audiovisual equipment, and enhancing sound and lighting systems.

A significant focus of the revitalization was to support the aquarium’s educational programs. The auditorium is now a prime venue for lectures on marine animals and other educational presentations. Schools are granted free access, making the auditorium a daily destination for educational field trips. The immersive learning experience provided by the new audiovisual setup ensures that students and visitors alike can engage deeply with the subject matter.

The integration of advanced video conferencing technology has further expanded the auditorium’s functionality. With three PTZ cameras installed for high-quality video streaming and conferencing, the aquarium can now connect with experts and audiences worldwide. This capability facilitates virtual lectures and events, broadening the reach and impact of the aquarium’s educational programs.

Community engagement has been significantly enhanced by the upgraded auditorium. The space now hosts movie nights featuring popular films like “Finding Nemo” and documentaries such as “Planet Earth.” These events have enriched the cultural offerings of the community, transforming the auditorium into a key attraction.

The impact of these enhancements has been profound. The modernized auditorium has become a main attraction, drawing in more visitors and increasing overall engagement with the aquarium. The aquarium has become a vital educational resource, welcoming students daily and providing an enriching learning environment. Hosting a variety of events, the auditorium has added to the community’s cultural landscape, making it a hub for both education and entertainment.
